Located just two miles south of Dallas’ famous Southfork Ranch, Murphy was one of the earliest areas to be settled in Collin County. It remained a rural farming community until the late 1980s. Expansion and development in Murphy and the surrounding areas of Southeast Collin County boomed in the late 1990s with the opening of the President George Bush Tollway. All four corners of Murphy’s main intersection FM544 and Murphy Road were developed with shopping centers on three of those corners. The Plano Independent School District and Wylie Independent School Districts have also expanded to serve Murphy’s growing population.
Murphy seeks to remain a vibrant, family oriented community that fosters a strong communications link between its local government and citizens. City leadership is dedicated to supporting a safe and secure environment that encourages civic involvement and community activities, upholds quality building standards, provides access to inviting parks and trails, maintains solid relationships with neighboring communities, and attracts newcomers with business and economic vitality. Murphy’s Central Park was just opened in 2014 complete with an amphitheater/stage, restrooms/concession stands, a spray park, a playground, a pavilion, a pond (catch and release fishing is anticipated), a nature trail as well as a concrete hike and bike trail. Future development plans include lighted sports fields and tennis courts. The park is adjacent to the recently opened PSA Murphy, a part of the Plano Sports Authority.
