The “City Between the Lakes,” Wylie residents can enjoy boating, fishing, and camping at Lake Lavon to the north or Lake Ray Hubbard to the south. In the 21st Century, Wylie has become one of the fastest growing communities in Collin County and now extends into neighboring Dallas and Rockwall counties. Most of the Collin County portion of Wylie is served by Wylie Independent School District. A small portion in Collin County is served by Princeton Independent School District. The Dallas County portion is served by Garland Independent School District. The Rockwall County portion is served by Rockwall Independent School District.

With its recent growth, the City has made a transition from "bedroom" community to a "balanced" community combining quality residential living with a healthy business climate. Wylie’s historic downtown brings the community together for events ranging from its unique rodeo, an annual car race, to arts festivals and holiday-themed celebrations including Boo on the Ballard and the Christmas Parade. There’s also the annual Bluegrass on Ballard, JazzArts Fest, Taste of Wylie, and more. Historic Downtown Wylie also offers the famous Wylie Opry and a host of local restaurants, salons, shops, and services. When you have the need to leave, Highway 78 running through the middle of Wylie takes you quickly to the George Bush Turnpike with direct access to I-75 Central Expressway to get to downtown Dallas, or stay on to get anywhere you wish to go in the Metroplex. Go north instead on Highway 78, and McKinney is 16 miles away with a plethora of upscale dining, shopping and entertainment offerings.
